ArrowAbout Us

The Methodist Social Service Centre (MSSC) had its origin in 1963, arising from the concern of members of the Methodist Church in Palmerston North at the many serious needs that were not being met by the very few welfare organisations available at that time.

Early programmes, involving counselling and social work with families at risk were later complemented by programmes in social and community education, helping people to develop their own resources and coping skills.

In 1983, the Centre pioneered one of the early Foodbanks in the country.

The sale of quality recycled clothing, begun in a small way in 1969, has grown to a major operation with two shops and two workshops employing about 200 volunteers and paid staff, providing a significant part of the funds needed to support the services of Methodist Social Services.

We partner with a variety of organisations, government departments, businesses and the wider community in the delivery of our services and other activities.

Our staff are skilled in the delivery of education programmes, social work support and counselling for children, their parents, couples and individuals.

The Mission is a registered Charitable Trust, under the governance of a Steering Committee and Board of Trustees, which are made up of members of the Methodist Parish in Palmerston North and members of the Wider Community, who have an interest in our work.
